You’ve taken all of the required steps to build your website and you’ve found a Web design company to work with. The first thing you’ll need is to do to secure a domain name. Buying a domain name is very simple and takes a few seconds. Most Web design companies will gladly make the purchase for you and include it as part of the Web design package. If you decide to let the Web design company purchase the domain name, make sure that you discuss ownership of the domain name.

Don’t let the Web design company own you. An “honest” Web design company will register the domain name in your name and add their information as technical contact only. By registering the domain name in your name, the Web design company won’t be able to stop you if you decide to go work with someone else. You own the domain name and it is part of YOUR business.

After the domain name, comes hosting. Many Web design companies provide hosting services as well. When setting up hosting, you will be given FTP information. Make sure that you ask for this information. This FTP information consists of a username and password and allows you to access your server. Once again, if you decide to leave the Web design company and work with someone else, you’ll need the FTP information to make the necessary changes.

When choosing a Web design companies, make sure that you ask lots of questions. You’ve worked hard to establish your business. Don’t let a Web company hold you hostage.
