The More Links you Have the Better!
In order to improve your search engine positioning one of the key things is to have many links, going to your website. The more links you get to your website, the better. Here are a few ways to increase your links.
Share your information
Offering resources, tips and hints and sending out information is a great way to generate interest and get people to re-visit your website. You can use this information to request links. At the bottom of your information inform your users that they are welcomed to post this information on their website and provide a link back to yours.
Don’t link willy-nilly
Search engines are not stupid. If your company is an accounting firm and links are coming from garden centres, book clubs and all sorts of weird places, chances are they will be disregarded. As a general rule, it is best to get linked from websites within your discipline. This will ensure that a logical pattern of links is found by search engines.
Submit your link to directories
This is particularly important when you are launching a brand new website since it can take a few weeks to get the search engines to index you. Submitting to directories such as DMOZ and Yahoo can help. Submitting to smaller directories such as regional ones or directories that focus on your specific field is also advantageous. However, don’t spend too much effort trying to submit to all of them. Most of them have very few visitors and are not worth the effort.
Get linked with the right words
If someone asks you if they can quote you and link to you, suggest to them that they use certain words instead of your url.
For example:
This link is better:
… I do not hesitate to say that Silvershadow Photographic Images provides great prenatal shots.
Than this one:
Prenatal photography: www.silvershadowimages.com.
Don’t forget your readers
It’s true that the more links you provide the better your search engine rankings will be. However keep your users in mind. If people leave a site to come to yours, they need to understand the relevance. The “you give me a link and I’ll link to yours” is a common approach, but don’t forget the relevance. There is no point linking to your favourite snack, unless you are in the snack industry.
