Benefits of working with a small company

When planning on working with a Web developer, you may have to shop around and see who is the “best fit” for you. You may come across big companies that have an amazing portfolio and many talented people and may come across a lone individual who is just as talented. So who is best? Big or small?

Michael Katz in his recent newsletter thinks that small companies have a tremendous advantage over large ones. Ever tried calling your bank to ask a simple question, only to find yourself, pressing a bunch a numbers in order to get the right menu item? This should never happen with small companies. Small business companies should provide you with the best customer support.

Here are a few things to look for when working with a small company?

1. Do they answer their own phone? Call display may be a great tool to avoid telemarketers, but one should answer client’s phone calls. People who are committed to building a solid relationship with their clients, answer their calls.

2. Is their email address the only way that you can reach them? Again, if the company is serious about working with you, he/she should give you their phone number at work and home in case of emergency.

3. Can you speak directly to the person that you need to? In a small Web design company, you may have a project manager, copy writer, HTML developer, graphic designer, etc… Most companies will let the project manager speak to the client and manage the project this way. However, if and when needed, access to the graphic designer or copy writer shouldn’t be difficult. Again, if they are serious about working with you, they should be able to give you what you need.

4. Is the service that they provide the only thing that they do? At Bluelime Media we create websites; that’s it. We don’t do brochures, business cards, flash games, or search engine optimization. But if you come to us and ask us to do these things, of course we’ll do them! As a small team we can easily find the right person for you to work with. We partner with many other small companies to offer you the service that you need.

Not let’s go to your bank and ask them if they can recommend a good graphic designer? I wonder what number I have to press to find that answer.
