The Scoop On Google Reader
Google Reader is a great piece of technology developed by the folks over at Google labs that lets you easily subscribe to information on the web. In tech terms, Google Reader is an RSS or Atom feed aggregrator. For those of us without propeller heads, this simply means that it allows available information on the web such as blog articles, e-zine pieces and news bulletins to come to one central place so that you can log in and enjoy at your leisure.
It was first released in October 2005 and since then has gone through a number of updates and improvements to make it more user friendly and functional. Not only can you have the information you are interested in come direct to your browser but you can also easily share it with others, organise it in an appropriate way and even access it via your WAP phone (if you have one!).
To use Google Reader in its simplest form, all you need is access to a PC with one of the following browsers: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Netscape, Mozilla or Opera. Go to Google Reader and sign in if you have a Google account or Gmail. If you don’t have either, unfortunately you’ll have to register if you want to take advantage of the Google Reader but the registration process is simple and intuitive in typical Google fashion - you simply enter your current e-mail address, choose a password, give them your location, verify a word, agree to the terms of service and off you go.
Once you’re set up with your Google account, its easy to use Google reader to subscribe to web page feeds that you like. There are 2 ways to do this:
a) from the webpage you are interested in, simply click on the RSS feed button and choose Google Reader from the choices given and it will automatically have this information come to your Google Reader account or
b) you can do this from Google Reader by clicking on add a subscription and searching feeds to find the one you want.
Once you’ve found it, click on the subscribe button and once again it automatically brings the info you want to the reader when updates become available.
That’s the scoop on Google Reader - Enjoy!
