I originally created my basic starter theme for teaching purposes. This simple starter theme is perfect for students to learn and dive deep into WordPress theming. I also use it over and over again for all the themes that I build and several of my colleagues have mentioned that they use it as their foundation as well.
As a web developer, I’m constantly trying to find ways to be more efficient and reduce the amount of duplication. During the past few months I’ve noticed that a lot of clients are incorporating jQuery sliders either on their home page or as part of their portfolio. Additionally, about 30% – 40% never want a blog component. As a result, I find myself either adding parts and templates to my starter theme or removing them.
Wouldn’t it be more efficient to just make three themes? Yes it would, and as of today, the basic starter theme now comes in three flavours.
- Original,
- no blog
- and with slider.
All of these are available on github and are free for you to use as you wish. The next iteration will be responsive, but I think that Robert Dall is interested in contributing that one.

Yup totally interested in contributing to that oneā¦
